Even though Bernie didn't want Heidi to go on her adventure, she only said so out of love. Though her mama doesn't know how to express her feelings, Heidi knows that she loves her. Heidi shows a lot of love for her family, as they do for her. This would frighten many children, but not Heidi. Though she was only thirteen years old, she decided that she would travel across the country to a place she'd never been, not knowing what was in store for her. There are many examples of Heidi's courage mentioned in the story, but the biggest one is when she decided to go to New York to get answers to her past. Though they have to go their separate ways, they both know that they will never forget each other. Then she meets Georgia, and this time, she tells the truth about her family, and finds that people can be understanding. Everything heads downhill with their friendship, and when Alice gets off the bus, Heidi thinks that all is lost. She weaves a complex, make-believe story about a grandma who's a famous celebrity and loves to bake cakes. They started their friendship off on a good foot, but as Heidi found out, sometimes lying is easier that telling the truth. Before that moment, Heidi had never had a chance to make many friends, and didn't quite know what to expect. Examples of friendship in the story include when Heidi met Alice at the bus station. It has a theme that revolves around the ideas of friendship, courage, and love for family.
