I recently read A Mother’s Story by Rosie Batty, an autobiographical account of family violence and it was disturbing to return to that theme. Intergenerational family violence is a central theme to this interesting book. Because the book is told empathetically from Jimmy’s perspective his behaviour never seems odd and it’s really only when other people tell him to settle down that we are reminded that it’s atypical behaviour. Jimmy’s cells spin faster and faster when he gets excited and he runs and runs and yells, even in the classroom. He is most similar to Christopher Boone in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time but without the mathematical prowess. The protagonist, Jimmy Flick, is charming and I was never able to predict what would next happen to Jimmy. I luxuriated in blocks of time in the hammock or sofa over two days and as temperatures climbed to 39C it was a great choice of activity. When I was offered a copy of our January book for book group, The Eye of the Sheep by Sofie Laguna, I thought I should read it quickly and pass it on.
